Sucrose Octasulfate Potassium (K-SOS) is a novel excipient. It is used as the raw material for the preparation of Triethylammonium Sucrose Octasulfate salt (TEA-SOS) used in liposome formation.
The excipient K-SOS is transformed into TEA-SOS by ion-exchange. TEA-SOS and the lipids form the liposomes by passive encapsulation following polycarbonate membrane extrusion.
An electrochemical gradient is subsequently formed by removal of TEA-SOS from the exterior of the liposomes by diafiltration.
